One-year old Paula was rescued in May 2016 by a group of ex-pat volunteer teachers who encountered two boys trying to sell her as a pet. The little chimp was malnourished, frightened and crawling with lice. After recovering for the past couple of months at our Mefou Sanctuary, Paula has been introduced to two new friends - Daphne & Little Larry.
Their first encounter took place in a quiet part of the forest where the babies play each day. We anticipated some challenges for Paula with boisterous Little Larry, who is known for his tendency to bulldoze through obstacles head first. In the end it was sweet Daphne who set the tone, by welcoming Paula with a whack across the head! After some gentle intervention from caregivers Sanda and Romain, things progressed more positively. This video shows moments from their introduction, starting with Paula staying very close to caregiver Stephanie. Eventually she gains the confidence to play with Little Larry, who showers her with hugs - perhaps a few more than Paula is strictly comfortable with!
