In a beautiful valley of abundant vegetation, at the foot of the mountains is Malinalco, an ancestral Magical Town of cobbled streets and multi-colored houses. Its streets are dotted with flowers that sprout from the walls of its colonial mansions and small temples from the 15th and 17th centuries that will transport you on a journey through Mexico's past.

Malinalco has been the seat of important historical events: valuable documents were signed here for the independentistas, led by Don José María Morelos y Pavón, and at the time of the Mexican Revolution he stood out for his fight on the arm of Emiliano Zapata.

The Cerro de los Ídolos protects the archaeological zone of Malinalco, one of the most beautiful in the state and from where you can see a magnificent panoramic view of the town. With a warm climate - subhumid and always sunny, its average temperature is 20ºC.

In the local cuisine you will find jerky tacos with chorizo, or Malinalco trout, if you like to experiment you can try the iguana broth or frog tamales; all made with strips of nopal, onion, french fries and their molcajeteada sauce of three chilies, accompanied of course by a glass of pulque or mezcal from the area.

PREHISPANIC SANCTUARY AND VIRREINAL CONVENT
It is one of the most beautiful towns in the state. The colonial-style architecture, the cobbled streets that follow the irregularity of the soil, the orchards of various fruits, as well as the climate, give it a paradisiacal appearance.

On Wednesdays the famous tianguis takes place that dates back to pre-Hispanic times, where you can find a diverse range of handicrafts and all the products of the region.

There is a fine shawl workshop that has won several competitions for its quality and designs. In the workshop you can also find tablecloths, napkins, cushions and towels.

What to see in Malinalco
The Ex-Augustinian Convent from the 16th century with a Plateresque style façade, recalls medieval buildings with a splendid pilgrim portal. Inside there is a beautiful decoration with wall paintings made by indigenous artists.

In contrast, Malinalco is also the site of the Cuauhtinchán Ceremonial Center, an ancient Matlatzinca settlement dating from the late postclassic. It is characterized by the monuments that make up a large terrace on the edge of a 125-meter high cliff, in the Cerro de los Ídolos, which offers a panoramic view of the town.

Malinalco has several beautiful chapels that you should not miss, each one has a story to tell. San Sebastián dates from the 16th century, San Guillermo has a beautiful arch at the entrance to the atrium, San Andrés is from the 17th century, San Juan has beautiful images inside, Santa Mónica was built in stages during the 16th and 17th centuries, San Pedro dates from the 17th century, San Nicolás Tolentino has a beautiful octagonal dome, Jesús María has an arched entrance with an original decoration that includes two pelicans, Santa María whose carved door shows its construction date in the 18th century and San Martín with a large atrium.

You can also visit the Casa de la Cultura, a beautiful building with an arcaded courtyard that has an interesting display of contemporary painters. On Saturdays there is a group of craftsmen working with wood.

Another cultural option is the University Museum that exhibits books, various works of art, archaeological pieces, bequeathed to Malinalco by Don Luis Mario Schneider, an intellectual of Argentine origin.

Very close to Malinalco in all its directions you can see a series of cave paintings and petroglyphs, among which the following stand out: Los Diablitos, El Coyotito and Las Caritas.

Things to do in Malinalco
The surroundings of the town offer ideal landscapes for walking, mountain biking and getting in touch with nature.

In Malinalco, paragliding has become very popular, you can do it with a tandem instructor and thus enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of the region.
