How to Secure Ladders to Vehicle Roof Bars / Rack using Rope.

In this video, I demonstrate the process of securing an aluminium ladder to the roof bars of a vehicle. This is my technique that I’ve evolved over some time and a little experimentation.

I start by placing the ladders centrally on the roof bars minimising the overhang to the rear of the vehicle. I then tie a Figure of Eight Loop in the rope ( this knot is used in climbing and is relatively easy to unpick).

I attach the loop over the roof bar end and feed the rope through the ladder then tension and secure with a dolly knot. I then pass the rope over the ladders and feed it round the centre of the ladders again tensioned and secured with a dolly knot (harvesters hitch).

Repeat the above process on the other roof bar and secure with a minimum of two half hitches.

Check the ladders are nice secure before moving the vehicle. (Use at your own risk)
