This week’s portion of Scripture includes 74 of the 613 commandments contained in the whole Torah. In it, Moses delivers specific rules about proper family relationships. He continues with numerous laws and instructions regarding civil life in the Promised Land. These include laws about divorce, the treatment of a captive woman, returning lost objects, forbidden mixtures, the erection of a rooftop fence, rape, collateral, and workers’ wages. All these are important principles of caring for our neighbors and their possessions.
This Parashah contains numerous examples of how we should structure and categorize our decisions and their consequences. Specifically, how we interact with others, how we interact with God’s creation, and how we relate to God.
