Comprising of the Thanon Klang, Thanon Dibuk, Thanon Phang Nga, Thanon Yaowarat, Thanon Krabi and Soi Romanee roads, the area is steeped in History and in bygone days was inhabited by settlers from many different nations and ethnic groups, including Chinese, Indians, Europeans and Muslims who came to trade or put down their roots. These early settlers built terraced homes in a style that later became known as ‘Sino-Portuguese’ architecture. Way back in the reign of King Rama IV, the tin mining industry flourished but these days the mines are preserved as museums and many Local buildings have been converted into Accommodation, Dining spaces, coffee shops and Souvenir shops.
Phuket Sunday Walking Street Market is called ‘Lard Yai Market’ by locals and is the most popular attraction in Phuket Town. This 360-metre long street market was an instant success, adding a much-needed event to the historical part of town. Every Sunday from 4 pm to 9 pm (and often beyond), the once quiet Thalang Road turns into a busy street.
The market is a chance for you to try one of the Phuket specialities. There are so many; it may be a little overwhelming, so follow your instinct if you are unsure. You’ll find an excellent mix of sweets and snacks and everyone seems to find something to nibble on as they walk. Locals also buy some food to take home, which people do a lot here.
