We had a nostalgic time on the Ruddington to Loughborough Junction steam train. I certainly remember train rides a child such as this to the coast. More often than not, we were a little late for the return journey and having to 'make do' in the luggage carriage.
It's a true step back in time. The different classes of carriages, some open seating and others more private with doors and blinds with the corridor to the outer edge. Just enough width to pass by another passenger if your paths crossed. The windows are smeared, steamed up or covered in condensation, so you only get a glimpse of outside. There aren't many clean windows. The washrooms/toilets are very limited on space and still dirty at best with only paper towelling to dry your hands, if any were available of course, ha. Over all it was a very comfortable return journey. The conductor was polite, friendly with some jovial banter, handing out authentic train tickets but paid for in modern tender. The card reader worked its magic, although the conductor wondered if he was getting a signal. I told him there should be a good signal, after all, the train line had plenty of them!

The Great Central Railway Nottingham GCR (N), has 10 miles of heritage railway running through the beautiful scenery of South Nottinghamshire and North-West Leicestershire. Starting at Ruddington Fields to Rushcliffe Halt, then on to Loughborough Junction. Services are pulled by heritage Steam and Diesel locomotives, re-creating the experience of train travel from a time when it was more than just a means to get from one place to another, and is a great experience for all the family.
