Bieber and his security detail were detained by Canadian authorities on August 31, 2010, when they were approached at an airport by a 12-year-old girl who requested to take a photo with him. Bieber asked her to put her phone away and pose with him, and once she complied, he playfully tried to lift her off the ground, but she began to scream and allegedly threw a pop tart at him.

The girl's father, Sheppard Lee, stated that his daughter and Bieber were "laughing and joking" during the encounter, adding, "he was doing absolutely nothing inappropriate." Lee also claimed that Bieber's security team were "violent and aggressive."

According to Bieber's attorney Shawn Holley, the pop singer and his security team were waiting for a commercial flight to go to Quebec to begin the first leg of their summer tour, and that "the whole incident had a major impact on his life." Holley stated that Bieber had no memory.
