United had won only once at Upton Park since the late 60's. Last year United lost the title at Upton Park as they effectively did in 1992 also. Whereas Newcastle had recovered from their Old Trafford defeat winning the three games they’d since played; United had a defensive shortfall and were stuffed 4-1 away to Spurs as well as a home draw to Villa. There was a 9 point gap with Newcastle also having a game in hand.
