Overview: Chantry Flat is a designated "Recreation Area" within the Angeles National Forest, about three miles (5 km) into Big Santa Anita Canyon, and is closely associated with the towns of Arcadia and Sierra Madre, CA. The flat itself houses a large public picnic area, and is the starting point for several historic trails of the San Gabriel Mountains, including the 28.5-mile (45.9 km) Gabrielino Trail. The US Forest Service estimates the road to Chantry as the third busiest entry into the Angeles, next to CA State Highways 2 and 39 [1].

The segment to Sturtevant Falls is family-friendly, but does include a few boulder-hopping stream crossings. Trekking poles come in handy, as do shoes with good tread.

Some sections of these trails are shared with horses and mountain bikes. Be alert and courteous.

When you get back to the trailhead, stop by the general store at the pack station for a cold drink and a snack. Sometimes on the weekends they fire up the BBQ!

Tips: Parking requires a National Forest Adventure Pass. You can purchase a pass at the pack station. This is a popular trailhead and the parking fills up quickly, often by 7:00 AM. Plan to start early or you may end up parking quite far from the trailhead.

**CARPOOL ARE HIGHLY RECOMMENDED DUE TO LACK OF PARKING SPACES AND ONLY NEED ONE ADVENTURE PASS FOR ONE CAR ***

Driving Directions :
Drive north on the 605 Freeway until it meets up with the 210 Freeway. Drive west on the 210 Freeway (going toward Pasadena). Exit at the Santa Anita Avenue off-ramp. At the end of the off-ramp, turn right (going north) onto Santa Anita Avenue and drive for about 6 miles until you reach the Chantry Flat parking area.

IMPORTANT!!!

*You will need to have a Forest Service Adventurer's Pass in the inside dash of you car if you will be parking here!

*You can purchase a Forest Service Adventurer's Pass for a one day parking for $5.00 at the Pack Store near the upper parking lot of Chantry Flat. Or, you can purchase a one-year pass for $30.00 or a $5.00 one-day parking at most sporting goods stores (REI, Big 5, Sport Chalet, Sportmart, etc.).
