We absolutely love our V1 Rougher, and we wanted to make another version that’s a little less difficult to produce so that we could bring them to our customers on a more regular basis. The V2 Rougher features the same super-rough tips as the V1 Rougher, and the handle is made on a lathe.

Leather Roughers are used for roughing a surface to maximize adhesion potential when gluing. They work by creating more surface area by lifting the fibers, which allows greater glue coverage and deeper penetration. This gives the contact cement a better surface to grab onto, which in-turn makes for a better bond that stabilizes the leather seam for easier stitching. Leather Roughers are an indispensable tool for every leather workshop.

These leather roughers are completely handmade to our exacting standards using only the finest materials. Each one is made from start to finish by Mascon Turnings in his Williamsburg, VA shop. The steel rougher shank is shaped and forged, and mounted in an Olive Wood handle. The angle of the rougher is optimized for comfort while roughing. The textured portion of the rougher is tungsten carbide, and is incredibly strong and long wearing. Since these tools are made one-at-a-time by hand, there will be slight differences in appearance in the shank and handles from tool to tool. The handles are made from a natural material, and while each one will be slightly different, they’re each beautiful and unique. No two will be the same, and these are truly functional art.
