This is how we amend our soil to get massive growth, better plant health & unbelievable production

This will benefit YOUR soil no matter where you live & especially if your soil is alkaline or clay

To fill our massive planter boxes we started out with composted cow, horse & chicken manure but we didn't have enough so we added least 50% ranch dirt

Our natural soil is alkaline\sandy so we originally enhanced it with 25% per volume with peat moss
Peat moss is a great soil additive. It is naturally acidic & it breaks up clay & alkaline soils. It makes soil soft, easy to work, holds water and Is easy for roots to penetrate

If you have serious clay soil, add Gypsum & peat moss... it will breakup the clay & soften your soil
Don't for the rest below

Every year, because we have raised beds on shale rock we amend our garden soil with the following ingredients

====
✏️ BIOCHAR
Watch my video Making Biochar
The year we tilled biochar in, our garden DOUBLED in SIZE & PRODUCTION
The biochar buffers the chemical change & stores excess acid and then releases back into the soil as the plants need/want it
With our soil enhanced like this we have grown MASSIVE pumpkins, GIANT onions, carrots, beats, peppers, berries & our winter banana squash come in at 3' & sometimes 4' long
I put abt 1" of biochar per 8" of soil
Biochar improves water quality because it's a carbon filter, absorbs toxins, reduces soil emissions of greenhouse gases, reduces nutrient leaching in soil by absorbing nutrients & releasing them to plant roots & thereby reduces watering & fertilizer requirements

✏️ 11-52-0
The 52 is Phosphate The higher the 2nd number the better. This is VERY important
Not just if you are growing Onions, but for EVERYTHING
Phosphates are very important to plants because they encourage root growth & thereby increases the uptake of other nutrients in the soil for a bigger, healthier plant that will produce more.
It is also extremely necessary for Onion Family Plants as they require massive phosphates to grow that big onion ball

✏️ CALCIUM
We use Eggshell Calcium
Watch my video DIY EGGSHELL CALCIUM
Eggshell calcium is not always immediately available to the plants but it slowly breaks down over time (slow release) in acidic soil, we put it on every year & last years calcium will be available this year & this years addition of eggshell calcium will be plant available next year
CALCIUM is an essential element in plant health.
It is needed in LARGE amounts by ALL plants
Calcium is a mineral that helps builds a plants cellular walls & membranes that helps the plant keep a physical barrier against pathogens & disease
Plants deficient in calcium are more susceptible to pathogens
Calcium deficiency symptoms appear as tissue necrosis or leaf curl & rot, stem sores or premature fruit decay such as tomato blossom rot or brown spots on peppers
Calcium deficiencies will cause plants to have smaller height, smaller leaves, less leave area & brown spots
Without enough calcium carrots will have pits & rot where pathogens have invaded
Celery will have small stunted stocks
Apples get brown spots
Cabbage, lettuce & brussels sprouts are more susceptible to leaf tip burn without enough calcium

✏️ IRON
Is necessary for all plants. I helps the plant maintain vital functions & health by assisting it to use nitrogen, assists with enzymes & chlorophyll production A lack of iron in a plants diet basically makes the plant anemic just like humans get without iron, you can function but not at your peak
====
✏️ MAGNESIUM
Magnesium & Calcium are both needed by plants to protect them from pathogens at the cellular level and utilize the suns energy for production. Without Magnesium plants can't capture the energy of the sun in photosynthesis
==
✏️ SULFUR
Almost every garden plant will thrive in acidic soil so how do you make your soil acidic?
Add sulfur
In time as the sulfur gets wet, it turns into a tiny amount of sulfuric acid, acidifying the soil & the plants LOVE IT
==
✏️ Chicken Manure
Never put fresh chicken manure on your garden, it is way too hot in nitrogen & will burn transplants & kill germinating seeds
Let your chicken manure compost for a year before you put it on
