From a note by Clifford Curzon. With the Sonata in F minor, Brahms's genius leapt out, at the early age of twenty, in all its astonishing maturity; one of his biographers, Specht, considered it to be a self-portrait of the composer as a young man. The work was completed in 1853, though the extraordinary slow movement and the Intermezzo date from an even earlier period; it consists of five movements instead of the usual four, each demonstrating in a different way what Tovey, in our own age, considered to be 'a mastery of classical technique unknown since Beethoven’.

The two Intermezzos on this recording belong to Brahms's last years, when he turned once again to the piano to confide, in a score of deeply expressive short pieces, some of his most mature, reflective and intimate thoughts (‘Even one listener is too many', he said). He referred to these last pieces as 'the cradlesongs of my sufferings', and their inwardness of expression is as remarkable as their technical perfection.
