After Stonewall Jackson's victory over the small force of Federals at the Battle of McDowell on May 8th, 1862, the Valley District commander moves his forces north up the Shenandoah Valley to confront the Union Department of the Shenandoah under Major General Nathaniel P. Banks, stationed around Winchester. Sidestepping the direct route up the Valley Turnpike towards the city, Jackson opts instead to move through the adjacent Luray Valley and attack Winchester from that direction. Guarding Front Royal is a small Union garrison of about 1,000 men under Colonel John R. Kenly of the Federal 1st Maryland Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Jackson's dashing strike against Front Royal on May 23rd takes the small garrison by surprise. The Confederates will have to clear the Federals out of Front Royal if they are to press on towards Winchester.
