At the time of her near-death experience, Karen Thomas was a physical therapist working in Anchorage, Alaska. She injured her spine, and during spinal surgery, the surgeon cut her left common iliac artery, causing her to bleed on the operating table. During the Near Death Experience that followed, she observed a surgeon who had been called from his office to try to save her life.

Karen had a visit to the Other Side with a Spiritual Guide and a Life Review before choosing to return to her body. The surgeon who saved her life confirmed to her what she had seen him do when he arrived at the hospital from his office, when she went to his office for follow-up after her hospital discharge. Karen was able to meet this surgeon again decades later, and he once again remembered her case and that she had shared her near-death experience with him on that occasion.
