The BMWs are known to have issues with PCV valve failure. The PCV stands for Positive Crankcase Ventilation and the valve is a mechanical regulator of pressure for the engine. Unfortunately, when this fails it can cause issues with the engine. The main symptom for this failure is a high pitch squeaking noise coming from the engine, which is the result of a vacuum leak. As typical BMW would have it, this valve is not easily replaced and is built into the valve cover, requiring a replacement of the entire valve cover assembly.
Most M car owners are under warranty and can get this replaced for free, but for those who are in my situation without warranty, this is a full detailed approach to replacing the valve cover. This job at a dealership is quoted to be anywhere from $1800-$2200. With this tutorial you can replace this yourself at home for ~$600 and some time on the weekend (roughly 6 hours including breaks). This is the first YouTube documented S55 valve cover replacement video, so hopefully this can help give back to the S55 community and save some of you $$$money! Link for parts are below.
