An iconic breakfast spot in Tamil Nadu, Murugan Idli Shop that first began in Madurai, today, has scores of branches in Chennai. The restaurant’s latest outlet in Krishnagiri, has turned into the place to stop at for patrons driving from Bengaluru either towards Salem, Madurai or Chennai.

In this episode of Gourmet On The Road, Food Lovers’ Editor, Kripal Amanna makes a quick stop at the eatery for a late breakfast, tasting some of the must-tries on the menu. This includes the restaurant’s signature Podi Idli, a paper-thin Masala Dosa, a ghee-laden Pongal, the Jigarthanda and more!

GOURMET ON THE ROAD RATINGS
PLAIN IDLI
not the softest idli you will come across, this one borders on being slightly firm. you taste the tart fermented edge of the batter. the idli is best enjoyed with the chutneys. the coriander chutney has a fresh flavour while the mint chutney makes for a zesty bite. my favourite accompaniment is the nourishing sambar fortified with lentils. the texture of the idli makes it perfect to be dunked in the sambar.

GHEE PODI IDLI
this idli is a lot more softer and has a certain springiness to it. Slathered with ghee and doused in a spirited, spicy podi, its texture is a lot more pleasing to the palate. the heat of the podi is tamed when eaten with the creamy lentils in the sambar. this is a delicious idli!

SPECIAL SWEET PONGAL
this dish is laden with ghee, so much so that it feels like you aren’t just eating the pongal but the ghee too! the dish isn’t cloying sweet, the amount of jaggery used is just right. the addition of toasted cashews gives it a nice bite and also helps cut through that dairy richness of the ghee.

GHEE MASALA DOSA
the dosa is crisp and translucent. you can hear it go crunch as you break into it. the potato filling is creamy, almost pate-like. a bit excessive on the salt but flavourful nonetheless. the dosa batter in no way interferes with the flavours of this soft mash. the dosa surprisingly manages to retain its crunch despite being dunked into the sambar. it's almost like biting into a puff pastry, that's how delicately crunchy this dosa is!

ONION UTHAPPAM
love the way this uthappam is loaded with onions! the onion has been roasted to a deep brown. you taste the delicious caramelised notes of the almost burnt onion on the top layer followed by the sweet crunch of the lightly sauteed onions below it. the thick uthappam just cradles all these delicious textures and flavours! the chutney provides for a nice break, if it gets too onion-y.

JIGARTHANDA
literally translating to ‘cool the heart’ the jigarthanda is a very popular cooler on the menu here. the orange flavoured ice cream made in-house has a texture that’s somewhere in between a gelato and sorbet. the jelly has almond essence in it, you can also taste the dairy from the basundi. if you like something cooling and refreshing, settle for this drink.

FILTER COFFEE
my choice of drink after a south indian breakfast! the sweet bitterness of the filter coffee is the right way to end a slightly over indulgent breakfast here at murugan idli shop.
