Travel to Almaty Kazakhstan! Impressions, attractions, cuisine, relaxation and what to see!

Twenty-five years ago, Almaty ceased to be the capital of Kazakhstan, but still remains its main cultural center and the real heart of the country. There is exotic cuisine and impressive architecture, and an excellent cultural program can be combined with alpine skiing in winter and trekking in summer. Almaty translated from Kazakh means “Apple Tree”. Apple trees have always grown in these places - they gave the name to the picturesque river tract near a large mountain range. In the Middle Ages, the small but rich settlement of Almaty was located here, one of the stopovers on the Great Silk Road. But during the Tatar-Mongol invasions it was devastated by internecine wars and raids, and by the 13th century the village fell into decay. People left these places, and only nomads sometimes set up camps on the remains of the settlement. In Almaty, located at the foot of the mighty Trans-Ili Alatau ridges, the main landmarks are not north and south, but up and down: either you are approaching the mountains or moving away from them. Moreover, almost all the streets in the city are parallel and perpendicular, so it’s easy to navigate even for those who don’t know the city at all. The main tourist and party centers are the “Golden Square” - the area between Satpayev, Raiymbek Batyr streets, Dostyk Avenue and Seifullin Avenue, as well as two pedestrian streets - Zhibek Zholy ("Silk Road") and Panfilov. However, it is interesting to walk around the entire center, which is almost entirely built up with unusual houses in the style of Soviet modernism.Among them there are real masterpieces, for example, the Kazakhstan Hotel, the Palace of Pioneers and Schoolchildren on Dostyk Avenue, a complex of buildings on Republic Square and the hardware and studio complex of Kazakh Television on Zheltoksan Street. Of course, we were not able to see all of these beautiful places, but there will be a reason to come back again! But we managed to see something. Ascension Cathedral The main Orthodox Cathedral of Almaty is one of the tallest wooden buildings in the world. This 54-meter temple with five domes was built in 1907 for the then Turkmen diocese, and it turned out to be amazingly strong - four years after the completion of construction, a terrible earthquake with a power of 10 points destroyed almost the entire city, but the wooden church survived, only one of the crosses tilted a little - this is noticeable even today. During the Soviet years, various public organizations lived in the building, and the antenna of the first Kazakhstani radio worked on the bell tower. Since 1995, services have been held in the cathedral again. And three large restorations returned it to its former elegant appearance. Green Bazaar (Kok-bazaar)
The oldest market in the city was opened in the middle of the 19th century. In 1975, a huge constructivist pavilion was built for the shopping arcades. In the evenings, the contours of the building are outlined with green lights, so the name is one hundred percent justified. Kok Bazaar is a real oriental market - hectic, noisy and very colorful. Here you can buy everything from salt to a car. The most colorful aisles are the food aisles; they even give tours along them.Incredible Kazakh fruits, vegetables, herbs, sweets and spices, all kinds of meat products and sausages and unusual Kazakh cheeses - this is the best place to buy delicious souvenirs and taste national delicacies. Kok-Tobe Park
“Green Mountain” - this is how the name of the hill is translated - the highest point of Almaty. You can climb to its top directly from the city center by cable car. At the top, at an altitude of 1100 meters, there is a park with attractions, a Ferris wheel, a zoo, a climbing wall and the largest mirror labyrinth in the country. On Kok-Tobe there are several cafes and restaurants, a karaoke club, and nearby the 372-meter Almaty TV tower pierces the clouds with a sharp spire. Another attraction of the park is the first monument to The Beatles in the CIS. Kazakh cuisine, based on dishes traditional to Asian nomads, is truly exotic, but for an unaccustomed person, the local specialty dishes may seem a little heavy. We visited not only restaurants, but also a local canteen. In general, see everything for yourself! For you our next video "Travel to Almaty Kazakhstan!
