3 November 1947 पाकिस्तानी सैनिक अपने बेहतरीन हाथियारों से लेस्स 700 से 1000 आदमियों की बटालियन लेके श्रीनगर की एक लौती हवाई पट्टी पर कब्ज़ा करने के लिए बड़गाम में छुप जाते है , और सही समय का इंतज़ार करने लगते है, इधर 4 कुमाऊँ रेजिमेंट की D कंपनी जिसमे सिर्फ 70 से 90 आदमी थे और उसमे भी इनके कंपनी कमांडर के हाथ में प्लास्टर बंधा हुआ होता है वो सब बड़गाम की कंडीशन को समझने के लिए आस पास के इलाकों में पैट्रॉलिंग कर रहे थे , तभी इनके पास एक मोर्टार का गोला आके गिरता है और ज़ोरदार धमका होता है, कंपनी कमांडर तुरंत आर्डर देता है, सारे जवान अपनी पोसिशन्स लेलेते है, और दुश्मन पर फायरिंग शुरू कर देते है,

मोर्टार की बॉम्बिंग और मशीन गन की भारी गोली बारी के बीच वो कंपनी कमांडर अपने टूटे हाथ के साथ भी एक पोस्ट से दुसरे पोस्ट पर भाग भाग कर अपने लड़को को गोलियां लोड करके भरी हुई मागज़ीने दे रहे थे , और ये कॉम्पनी कमांडर थे मेजर सोमनाथ शर्मा , दुश्मन के मुकाबले अपनी तादाद और गोला बारूद मे कमी देखते हुए जब शर्मा हाई कमांड से मदद मांगते है तो इन्हे वापिस आने को बोला जाता है, लेकिन शर्मा एक इंच भी पीछे हटने से मना कर देते है

3 November 1947 Pakistani soldiers with a battalion of 700 to 1000 men equipped with their best weapons hide in Badgam to capture Srinagar's only missing airstrip, and wait for the right time. Meanwhile, D Company of 4 Kumaon Regiment which had only 70 to 90 men and in that too their company commander had a plaster bandage on his hand, were patrolling in the nearby areas to understand the condition of Badgam, then a mortar shell falls near them and there is a loud bang, the company commander immediately gives orders, all the soldiers take their positions, and start firing on the enemy,

Amidst the mortar bombing and heavy machine gun firing, that company commander even with his broken hand was running from one post to another and giving loaded magazines to his boys, and this company commander was Major Somnath Sharma, When Sharma asks for help from the high command after seeing his numbers and ammunition being less than the enemy, he is asked to come back, but Sharma refuses to retreat even an inch.
