As scene as pleasing as incomprehensible. A juggler summons two chairs, which come to the stage jumping and twirling around. Across the back of these chairs the operator places a sheet of glass on which he lays a box about four inches high. He then takes a table cover, with his servant's help, rolls it up and from the centre emerges a lady, beautifully dressed. At the juggler's order she jumps in the box, in which she completely disappears. The operator, in taking the box, notices an incredulous smile among the audience; he then affirms that the lady is still inside, and to prove it he puts the box on his knees and the girl appears again in full figure. He makes her go in again, and opening the box he shows that the girl has vanished and that her dresses only remain at the bottom. Then he jumps into the box himself, and his servant afterward; the box rolls off the stage without any help.

Marie Georges Jean Méliès (8 de diciembre de 1861 - 21 de enero de 1938) fue un ilusionista y cineasta francés famoso por liderar muchos desarrollos técnicos y narrativos en los albores de la cinematografía.
Méliès, un prolífico innovador en el uso de efectos especiales, popularizó técnicas como el truco de parar y fue uno de los primeros cineastas en utilizar exposiciones múltiples, la cámara rápida, las disoluciones de imágenes y la película en colores. Fue también pionero en el uso de guiones gráficos.1 Gracias a su habilidad para manipular y transformar la realidad a través de la cinematografía, Méliès es recordado como un «mago del cine».
Dos de sus películas más famosas, Viaje a la Luna (1902) y Viaje a través de lo imposible (1904), narran viajes extraños, surreales y fantásticos inspirados por Julio Verne y están consideradas entre las películas más importantes e influyentes del cine de ciencia ficción. Méliès fue también un pionero del cine de terror con su temprana película Le Manoir du Diable (1896).
