When the Usman family emigrated from Auchi, Nigeria to the Dallas, Texas in 1995 in search of a better life, Kamaru’s father instilled one important character in each of his 3 boys. The ‘Quest for Perfection’. After sneaking his way unto his highschool wrestling team, Kamaru quickly exceled at the sport, finding his way to a state championship, and later a collegiate wrestling scholarship at the University of Nebraska. In just his 2nd professional fight, Kamaru suffered his first mixed martial arts loss via submission. Here, he learned first hand, the agony of defeat, and what it felt like to quit on himself.

Unbeknownst to him, it was at this very moment, that the ‘Nigerian Nightmare’ was born. Vowing to never fall short of triumph again, Kamaru avenged his one loss in every single bout, embarking on an astonishing track record of 18 consecutive wins, boasting the UFC’s longest active win streak and ranking of #1 pound for pound fighter.
