Jonah is adrift. Jonah now finds himself a castaway. Jonah had fled from his God. But there is no escape from God, and he was going to discover what a fearful thing it is to fall into the hands of the living God, as Hebrews 10:31 says, "It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God." Jonah’s flight spells out the spiritual breakdown that will come with disobedience. Before his calling, he was shaped by God's Word and presence. Now with these elements gone, Jonah is a man who is spiritually, lost at sea.
