An action performed or a feeling experienced in response to a situation or event.
Reaction clips have been a part of Japanese variety shows for a long time. In the 1970s, an evolution of a popular quiz show called Naruhodo! The World introduced a "waipu" format where a panel of celebrity guests watched short videos and answered questions.
In 2006, a child reacted to the "Scary Maze game" prank on YouTube. In 2007, reaction videos began to appear on the Internet.
Sam Anderson, who is Sam Anderson's editor at The New York Times, described the phenomenon as encapsulating the fundamental experience of the Internet. For him, the videos were an example of how the Internet can allow people to experience a dangerous and frightening experience without having to physically interact with it. Similarly, reaction videos can also help people identify with a cultural experience, which is becoming more universal.
