About This Video: ALTERNATIVE NITRATE REDUCTION WITH EMERGENT PLANTS

About two years ago, an experiment was performed at an LFS by three Los Angeles-based scientists (a retired quantum physicist and two ichthyologists from the Aquarium of the Pacific) to quantify several anoxic denitrification setups and to test common nitrate-centric filter media comparatively to aquatic and emergent plants with respect to their nitrate consumption over the course of one year. In particular they closely monitored anaerobic population in the media and what events and parameters affected its population growth or decline.

Ultimately, they found that the greatest nitrate reduction for the dollar was had by simply using specific emergent plants under 'specific lighting color temperatures'.

In fact, they revealed that plants could be biased to uptake specific nutrients by varying the lighting color!

To that end a variety of common emergent plants were tested for nitrate uptake. When the tests were completed, most of the emergent plants were rehomed to the tanks in the following video.

This is a ten-minute 'tour' of the fish room they euphemistically referred to as "The Cove". The concept was to create a room with the tanks themselves as a component of an art installation. They arranged three large tanks in a square, with 'one-side' of the square being the seating area. So, the tanks form a "U" that you essentially sit in, such that the seating closes the square.

As you'll see from the lists below, these tanks are maximally over-filtered and over-stocked, so they represented high yet predictable nitrate levels after certain periods of time. Previously used and tested nitrate-centric filter media was removed due to its poor efficacy such that the results below represent ONLY commonly available biofiltration media and emergent plants. There is no other form of filtration, only additional aeration.
