The Toronto Raptors, 5 years removed from winning an NBA championship are heading into their 30th anniversary season, and let's be honest--things look a bit uncertain. And if you've been following the preseason pundits, the experts, the armchair coaches and prognosticators on Twitter, you probably think the Toronto Raptors are heading into the worst season ever.

But actually, the Raptors have patiently, somewhat amazingly put together a collection of castoffs, underrated gems and role players around their core 4, and are ready to play some exciting basketball.

They know there's a good chance they'll be bad. They're not running from it. And if NBA history has taught us anything, bandaids usually don't work, and acceptance is a key ingredient to attaining long-term success.

They're not betting it all for a 1-year window. They're not dragging a middling core into the hopes of a one-off upset conference finals. They're targeting something more -- a cultural renaissance, a dynasty, a self-sustaining ship.

This isn't going to be beautiful overnight -- rebuilds seldom are. But the approach is right for the first time in a long time, and that should be commended, even if it will only LATER be celebrated for what it was.

We are never right on this channel. But we're usually early. Let's be early again.
