We visited Hakone in December. It is an interesting day trip from Tokyo, great for kids because of the variety of transport along the route.

What were the MISTAKES that I made?
1) Small mistake - I would not have tried to have a picnic in Gora Park in December - it's too cold!
2) CRITICAL MISTAKE - I would have paced myself better instead of spending too much time at one place (which was Gora Park) and MISSED the sightseeing cruise!
3) BIG MISTAKE - I should have booked one night accommodation in Hakone which would have enabled us to better utilize the 2-day Hakone Free Pass.

Month of travel: December
Accommodation: Toyoko Inn Ikebukuro 2 (in Tokyo)
1 double room for 2A+1C below 12 stay for free (booked using spouse Toyoko Inn membership so he received 1 Toyoko Inn point);
2nd double room for 2C (above 12)+1C below 12 stay for free (booked using my Toyoko Inn membership so I received 1 Toyoko Inn point).
Note: 10 points = 1 free single room night which you can pay for the difference for a double room. No expiry date for points (so you can accumulate points from future trips as well). To get more BANG for your points, ONLY use the free night (from using 10 points) on days when the hotel rate is HIGH (such as Saturdays) and at Toyoko Inn locations that are more expensive.
