Yakshagana Jambavathi Kalyana is based on story related to marriage of Sri Krishna with Jambavathi the adopted daughter of great bear Jambavantha.

'Satrargitha, the king of Yadavas' owns a precious diamond ‘Shamantaka’ (believed to be same one known by the name Kohinoor) that he obtained after years of meditation to god Surya (sun). He turns down the request of Sri Krishna to hand it over to emperor Ugrasena for the betterment of the entire population.

One day the brother of Satrargitha, Prasena wears it while going out for hunting in the forest. When Prasena does not return from the forest, every one suspects Sri Krishna might have killed him to get the precious stone. When sage Narada learns this, he takes no time to reach out to Balarama, the brother of Sri Krishna with the news. He makes sure Balarama gets message in a way that upsets him and make him angry with Krishna.

Krishna without the knowledge of what is cocking behind him, comes to the court of Balarama. Soon he finds that Balarama is upset with him and his brother thinks he is responsible for the murder of Prasena. Upon Sri Krishna taking oath in the name of parents, he believes Krishna. However, he directs Krishna to find out what might have happened to Prasena and Shamantaka.
When Krishna reaches forest with Yadavas, he finds the dead body of Presena in a pool of blood. He realizes a furious lion might have killed Presena as he see foot step of lion around him. As he follows the foot step of lion to his surprise he finds that lion too was dead and there is no sign of precious stone. Now he see foot step of another animal that might have killed mighty lion. He follows the foot step and it leads him to a cave. Krishna asks all his associates to wait outside the cave and enters the cave.

Upon entering the cave, Sri Krishna was amazed as he see a beautiful girl playing with a small baby. He also notices the ‘Shamantaka’ tied to the baby cradle. Krishna now wants to find answer for all his questions and decides to show his presence by making ‘shankha naada’ (sound of conch shell).
The girl and baby gets scared hearing a ‘Shankha nada’ from a stranger and calls father with fear. A great bear rushes with anger to help the girl. The bear asks Krisha with what intention he has entered the cave and why he scared girl and a baby. Krishna narrates the story that made him to come to the cave and asks bear to hand over the precious stone. The bear reply with sarcasm that he is not ordinary bear. He killed a furious lion to obtain the stone and there is no way Krishna can get it from him. The bear also

introduces himself as Jambavantha who has lived many ‘yugas’ (era). He also takes pride in narrating his strength and how he helped Sri Rama to build bridge to ocean to reach Lanka. Sri Krishna has no option to fight against the bear that is very rudiment and not ready to give-up the stone.

After 21 days of rigorous fight Jambava decides to yield. Now, he suspect that Sri Krishna is not an ordinary human. He wants to know the truth and requests for his true identity. Krisha decides to disclose his identity. He takes the form of Sri Rama and tells Jambavatha that Rama and Krishna are one and the same.
Jambava is extremely happy to see his lord Sri Rama whom he served with dedication during ‘tretha yuga’ (era of Rama). He pleads guilty for fighting with arrogance. Sri Krishna reminds him about the promise he had made that in every era he will visit Jambavantha. He also requests him to hand over the stone as that he can be free from allegations on him.

Jambavantha hands over the stone and requests Sri Krishna to marry his adopted daughter Jambavanthi. Krishna happy agrees to his request and takes his daughter as his wife and also adopts the baby.
