Apple got all the attention last week, launching their new Vitals app, which is a direct competitor to Whoop. However, Whoop also very silently launched a major upgrade about a month ago, which might just keep it ahead of Apple. The Whoop Strap and Whoop app have been my go-to system for overall health and sports tracking, because as an overall package it is great. However, when it comes to the individual elements of health and sports, the Whoop Strap has always been good, but not amazing. One thing that has needed some improvement in my opinion is the Heart Rate tracking during sports. So, imagine my surprise when I noticed that the heart rate patterns of my Whoop Strap looked different from normal. At first I thought that Strava, the app I use to save my heart rate, had made changes to the raw data, but this wasn’t the case. So, I went through the update logs of Whoop and saw that about a month ago they launched an “Improved heart rate estimation algorithm”. This explains why my heart rate patterns look different

So, though the differences are not as big as they are for me, I would say that also on Raphael the heart rate tracking seems to have improved. Additionally, the weird artifacts of having this weird smoothed constant heart rate are gone for him as well. So, overall, there does seem to be an improvement in heart rate tracking, which is something I am quite excited about. It also shows the power of algorithms. With the exact same hardware, Whoop has been able to get significantly better performance. This also gives me hope that other aspects, like for instance the Sleep stage tracking might improve further. Where Whoop is a lot better than the Oura Ring at heart rate tracking, it is slightly worse at sleep stage tracking. I personally use a combination of the Oura Ring and Whoop Strap for most of my wearable health tracking, where Whoop is probably the best all-rounder for sports and health, but the Oura is better for just the sleep part. I am curious if the new Vitals app that Apple announced will be able to challenge them, though my first tests make me think it is just a first step, and a lot is still lacking compared to what Whoop and Oura offer, but more about that in a future video.
