One of the most feared military groups in History is the Special Air Service, also known as the SAS. They began during the Second World War, and during the conflict were involved in many covert missions behind enemy lines, but there were a number of SAS operations that did not go well, and two in particular resulted in the executions of dozens of SAS soldiers. Operation Bulbasket was planned to halt the advancement of the 2nd SS Panzer Division Das Reich following D-Day and the Normandy Landings, however this resulted in the capture of many SAS soldiers and they were then executed by firing squad.

Hitler issued the Commando Order which stated that any enemy commando should be executed quickly without any trial. Because of this, the British military knew what would happen with captured SAS men. Operation Loyton also took place in a mountainous region, and the SAS were planned to weaken the Germans behind their lines before they were relieved by the Americans. But this didn't happen, and for months many were on the run from the Wehrmacht and the SS, but over 30 SAS men never returned. Those who were captured were executed inside of a forest by firing squad.
