Moses laid hands on Joshua to anoint him to lead the Children of Israel. However, in Joshua 1:8, the Lord told Joshua to meditate on Scripture in order to do it. God told him that this was the way to make his way prosperous and to have good success. This is a clear indication that simply being called and receiving the laying on of hands is not enough. Paul also laid hands on Timothy. But he told him to meditate and give himself wholly unto his calling. Paul also said to stir up the gift. This again teaches us that we must do important things ourselves to maintain what God has called us and anointed us to do. Jesus said that many are called, but few are chosen.
