Not gonna lie, I'm a little nervous. This is the big one. Of all the quirky additions and classic staples of video game features, fishing is one of the earliest instant success stories with the most obvious reach. It stretches across the genres, across time, across hemispheres, and has almost become a mandated inclusion by the industry and its consumers. Its implementation encompasses every part of the spectrum. From simple button press mini-games to fully fleshed out simulations with lure and line choices meant to optimize catching specific fish. Video games have covered fishing in almost every incarnation: as pastime, as career, as sport, as survival skill, the list goes on and on. Fishing’s the chum in the water, and we’re frenzying at the smell. We’ve fallen for fishing hook, line and sinker. And today we’re going to learn a little about why, and what you find out might surprise you! Fishing in games isn’t just a neat side-activity; there’s a significant purpose behind its inclusion, and several reasons we gravitate to it like bait on a line. Sounds a bit fishy? Trust me, after this deep dive, you’ll be swimming to my tune. But that’s enough floundering around, school is in session, and I’d like to keep things flowing. I’m also getting tired of these puns. They stink- you could say they smell a bit…fishy?...Fish. Fish puns.
