The poet's soul wishes to rebirth in the immortal and changeless works of art rather than in flesh. It prefers to enter the golden bird made by Grecian goldsmiths and be set on and artificial tree. It would then sing of "what is past, or passing, or to come" to the lords and ladies of Byzantium. Yeats in a radio broadcast which speaks of this golden bird.
