Join co-curators Rosina Buckland and Alfred Haft as they introduce the context, scope, themes and highlights of this special exhibition.

In this online launch event, Buckland and Haft will discuss the recently acquired drawings on display in the show, made in the 1820s–1840s by the great Hokusai (1760–1849), best known for his famous print, popularly called The Great Wave.

These especially rare drawings were made with masterly brushwork for an unpublished illustrated encyclopedia called The Great Picture Book of Everything, depicting scenes from Buddhist India, ancient China and the natural world.

Public programme supported by the Japan Society.

This event is part of the public programme accompanying the exhibition Hokusai: The Great Picture Book of Everything at the British Museum (30 September – 30 January), supported by The Asahi Shimbun.
