Michael Dana is the son of the late head of the Egyptian Jewish community, Joseph Dana. Michael left Cairo for Israel in 1980 following the signing of the Camp David Peace Accords, when his parents realized that he and his siblings could not study or marry Jews in Egypt. Until his father's death in 1988, he would return for visits in Cairo twice or three times a year.
