Wales' reward for topping their qualifying group for the 1976 European Championships - the only Wales side ever to top a qualifying group - was a two leg quarter final play off with Yugoslavia, it would not be until 1980 that group winners would qualify automatically for a finals tournament. Unfortunately for Wales the Yugoslav's of the mid 70s were a formidable outfit and proved too strong for a battling wales team - beating Mike Smith's side 2 - 0 in Zagreb in this 1st leg and holding Wales to a 1-1 draw in the return in Cardiff. The game was also noteworthy for the debut of Wales famous 'tram line' admiral strip - regularly voted as peoples favourite in polls of football supporters.

The return leg at Ninian park in May 1976 would however be mired in controversy. East German referee Rudi Glockner chalked two Wales goals off and awarded the yugoslav's a very dubious penalty and led the teams off the pitch when some Wales supporters - incensed by Glockner's eccentric refereeing - invaded the pitch. As a result UEFA would ban Wales from staging qualifying games in Cardiff for two years, which would lead to Wales playing their crucial 1978 world cup qualifying game against Scotland at Anfield - and we all know what happened there.
