The Aussie Fisherman Greg hunting mudcrabs in the muddy mangrove creeks in North Queensland. This spot is one of my favourites, I have caught 10 huge crabs in my ultimate pro crabpots in the last 4 days, which is pretty good for my area.
This spot is probably so good because there are a lot of crab holes in the mud banks and mangroves surrounding a small gully where I place the crabpot.
I have been doing something I don't normally do by setting the crabpot in the same place over and over. I still get pretty excited when I pull up a crabpot with a good lot of crabs in it, even after 46 years of professional fishing. I used to catch mudcrabs in crabpots that I had made myself as well as catching them with a crab hook out of the crab holes when I was a kid.
While I was tying up the giant mudcrabs, the sandflies were biting any exposured skin. They sting you and leave you feeling very itchy. Some people come up in big lumps and get sick as well.
We have a huge variation in tide heights, ranging from 3 m to 6.5 metres. I seem to do my best crabbing on the big tides.
The last crab is a bit on the small side, so I will measure it with my measure from Iron and Bark. They make lots of stainless steel products. In Queensland, the male mudcrabs have to be 150 mm across the body, and all female mudcrabs have to be released as soon as possible back into the water. It's illegal to take them.
As you can see in the video, I place a hessen bag over each layer of crabs so they don't bite each other. The tub has to have holes in it so the water can run out when you pour water over them to cool them down. It's very important that the water runs out. On a hot day, if the water stays in the tub, it could kill the crabs. The water stops them from dehydrating.
