With the exception of cats/exhausts, after market steering wheels are probably the most commonly asked question we get, so it’s about time we covered it.

New MoT regs say that you can’t remove a factory fitted airbag:

7.1.5. Airbags
This inspection is for all airbags fitted as original equipment other than on Class 3 vehicles.
A passenger airbag that is switched off is not a defect.
Defect Category
(a) An airbag fitted as original equipment obviously missing Major
(b) Not in use
(c) An airbag obviously inoperative Major

This now makes George’s boss kit/quick release system non compliant. George has a brand new carbon wheel from phatbitsuk, complete with airbag that we replace the quick release boss kit setup with.

In this video we try and explain why airbags are important and what happens when they go off. We show you both drivers and passengers airbags being activated to demonstrate a few points about in-car safety.

Obviously, the same as for cats, if your car didn’t come with an airbag from the factory you don’t have to fit one now. What you can’t do is remove one that was fitted from the factory.

In-car safety systems are designed to work together so remove or deactivate one thing and it will quite probably have an effect on how all of them work to protect you and your passengers in the event of a collision.

You may also find that insurance companies will take a dim view of removing factory safety features from the car as it increases the risk of injury and potentially increases the risk to them financially. Just be aware of that as well.

I hope you find it interesting. Stay safe.
