Nutmeg Love Lives In Your Spice Cupboard: Ease Digestion, Relax, Sleep!

So many gifts live in our spice cupboards! We know them for their flavors, yet these robust aromatics also offer plenty of therapeutic actions. Today we’ll tap the gift of nutmeg.

Nutmeg, scientifically called Myristica fragrans (Myristicaceae), is native to the Banda Islands, aka the “Spice Islands,” located within the Moluccas archipelago of Indonesia.

Nutmeg Gifts: helps us digest food (carminative), relaxant, sleep helper, hypotensive (bring down blood pressure), aphrodisiac, heart opener + more. 
 
Flavor & Energetics: very aromatic, spicy, warm, cooling, drying, stimulating, bitter, opening, moving, clearing, mildly numbing. Add it to food and drink, in savory or sweet offerings. Stews, soups, chai, milk, cream or coconut dishes, etc.
 
Freshly Grated Nutmeg vs Pre-Ground
Best to use the freshly grated nutmeg as we don’t know how long ago the grinding happened. Remember once we powder / grind an herb we hasten its oxidation process (which causes loss of flavor, color, aromatics, therapeutic constituents). 

Nutmeg Dosage: Very safe range is 500 milligrams = ½ gram = ¼ teaspoon. Some herbalists use up to 1 teaspoon (= 2 grams) in recipes. I suggest staying under 1 teaspoon. 1 whole nutmeg seed weighs about 6 grams = 3 teaspoons finely ground. If the dosage is ½ gram or ¼  teaspoon, then 1 whole nutmeg should last about 12 days. 
 
Warning: Ingesting more than 5 grams can affect the central nervous system negatively. That would mean eating a whole nutmeg seed (6 grams), or 3 teaspoons of finely powdered nutmeg. Don’t do this!
Do not consume large quantities when pregnant or nursing.
