There is an unexpected threat to the coast redwood forests of Northern California and Southern Oregon. Black bears have started a relatively new behavior of tearing the bark off of younger redwood trees, which kills the trees. They are also killing Douglas fir and grand fir in our coastal forests. This is a new behavior that has been quickly escalating over the past few decades. This along with a population explosion of black bears in many areas of coastal forests has been devastating to regenerating forests.
