We are happy that he agrees on other points of our brief, but, regarding the place of the woman in the society, we cannot agree with his position.”

“It's very conservative, and it's not the way we want to do in UC Louvain. We want to be open that everybody can develop in our university; women, men, whatever their sexuality or their sexual orientation. It's really not our position. So we are not agreeing with him on this point.”

STORYLINE:
Pope Francis’ comments on women at the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium were met with disapproval and incomprehension on Saturday.

Pope Francis travelled to the University Saturday afternoon to speak to students and honor the institution as they celebrate their 600th anniversary.

In a speech the pope spoke about the role of the women in the church, noting that “womanhood speaks to us of fruitful welcome, nurturing and life-giving dedication.”

Several women on the stage looked perplexed as he continued speaking on the importance of “marriage to motherhood, or from virginity to the service of others.”

Francoise Smets, a rector at the University, sat next to the pontiff as he made his speech repeatedly adding, “the church is feminine.”

“We cannot agree on this position for sure. We are fighting against discrimination for women, and we would like women to have another role in the society and in the church also,” Smets said in an interview after the event.

Following the event in the University’s main theatre, the pope made a trip around a the campus in his popemobile greeting the crowd.
