As part of the cooperation between the Lied Akademie of the Heidelberger Frühling, the Hampsong Foundation, and the Pierre Boulez Saal, young singers and pianists are given the opportunity to participate in multiple working periods in Heidelberg and Berlin over the course of several months or years. During the Schubert Week, they present their work with Thomas Hampson in two public workshops and a concluding performance.

In more than 600 songs, Franz Schubert brought to musical life virtually all aspects of human emotions. His artistic adventurousness and his gift to focus thoughts “into limited but sharply defined contours,” as Franz Liszt said about his fellow composer, helped make the German word “lied” an untranslatable term. As in previous seasons, the world of Schubert will be the focus of an entire week of concerts and workshops at the Pierre Boulez Saal, featuring both veteran and young artists brought together by curator Thomas Hampson. In addition to Schubert’s songs, they will also explore the works of some of his predecessors and contemporaries such as Johann Rudolph Zumsteeg, Carl Loewe, and the composers of the “Berliner Liederschule,” such as Johann Friedrich Reichardt and Carl Friedrich Zelter, presenting a multilayered image of the lied genre.

Schubert-Woche 2022

Als Teil der Kooperation zwischen der Lied-Akademie des Heidelberger Frühlings, der Hampsong Foundation und dem Pierre Boulez Saal erhalten junge Musikerinnen und Musiker die Möglichkeit, über einen längeren Zeitraum an verschiedenen Arbeitsphasen in Heidelberg und Berlin teilzunehmen. In zwei öffentlichen Workshops und einem Abschlusskonzert geben sie im Rahmen der Schubert-Woche Einblick in ihre Arbeit mit Thomas Hampson.

In mehr als 600 Liedern hat Franz Schubert nahezu alle Facetten menschlicher Emotionen musikalisch zum Leben erweckt. Seine unerschöpfliche Experimentierfreude und die Gabe, „Gefühle in begrenzte, aber scharf ausgeprägte Konturen“ zu fassen, wie Franz Liszt über seinen Kollegen sagte, machten das deutsche Wort „Lied“ zu einem unübersetzbaren Ausdruck. Auch in dieser Saison ist dem Kosmos Schubert wieder eine ganze Woche gewidmet, in der namhafte ebenso wie junge Künstlerinnen und Künstler auf Einladung von Kurator Thomas Hampson in Konzerten und Workshops im Pierre Boulez Saal zusammenkommen. Dabei nehmen sie neben dem Schaffen Schuberts auch verstärkt das seiner Vorgänger und Zeitgenossen wie Johann Rudolph Zumsteeg, Carl Loewe und der Komponisten der Berliner Liederschule um Johann Friedrich Reichardt und Carl Friedrich Zelter in den Blick und zeichnen so ein vielschichtiges Bild der Gattung Lied.
