1968... #1 New Zealand #1 Canada #1 Australia #1 Denmark #1 Brazil #6 US Billboard Hot 100 #6 US Cash Box.. I Started a Joke was the last track recorded by the members of the Bee Gees for the Idea album. Robin Gibb told The Mail On Sunday November 1, 2009: "This is a very spiritual song. The listeners have to interpret it themselves – trying to explain it would detract from the song." Robin Gibb's son played this song just after his father died from kidney failure on May 20, 2012. Robin-John Gibb told The Sun: "When he passed away we went out, they took the equipment away and we came back in. I picked up my phone and found 'I Started A Joke' on YouTube and played it. I put the phone on his chest and that was the first time I broke down. I knew that song and its lyrics were perfect for that moment. That song will always have new meaning to me now."

The music video was directed by Jean-Christophe Averty. Filming took place in Brussels as part of the Idea TV Special project. The song has been covered by many pop stars including Robbie Williams and the Pet Shop Boys. The most popular was the version of the American rock band Faith No More. Director Vito Rocco shot a colorful video for it with the participation of Martin Freeman, Sean Dingwall and David Hoyle. #barrygibb #mauricegibb #robingibb #beegees #beegee #beegeessongs #istartedajoke ‪@beegees‬ ‪@musictymemachine‬
