Schnauzers were originally bred in Germany during the 19th century with specific working purposes in mind.

The Standard Schnauzer was bred as a versatile working dog. Its primary tasks included guarding property, herding livestock, and serving as a reliable companion and protector for farmers and their families. They were also used for rat-catching and were known for their keen sense of hearing and alertness. In the American Kennel Club, they are in the Terrier group.
