Nonverbal children with Autism often have problematic articulation that doesn’t always follow the typical development rules. Their articulation can be really difficult to understand. One thing i follow to differentiate between babble and actually words is through her sound pattern. If she has the capability to repeat it over and over again with the visuals.

While she may not say the words right, she is very close, I say the word over, not to correct her but to hear if she will repeat it again but in her own way. A lot of her speech problems also come from the wide gap in her mouth due to thumb sucking.

YES Mikko is still nonverbal, 99% of her day consist of nonverbal communication. Nonverbal does not mean MUTE and it does not mean incompetent. We don’t know if she will be nonverbal forever.

The goal is not limited to verbal talking, the goal is communication and that has many forms.

When I use the word Nonverbal, I am not limiting her, I am simply stating that even without words, she finds a way to express her needs and wants. If anyone is limiting the nonverbal community, it’s those that ONLY view communication through words.
