The reverse 360 off the lip is a really fun move to do in big or small waves and an absolute must have in your bodyboarding arsenal. Michael ‘EPPO Eppelstun was the pioneer of this move almost 30 years ago and it has been a staple in competitive bodyboarding and free surfing ever since.

In this video Rob Barber takes us through a step by step guide on how to perform the move correctly. Using the video analysis process we use during our coaching weekends and Bodyboard Holidays he highlights some of the common mistakes we make when learning the reverse 360 off the lip.

The first thing you need to do is have your open face reverse spins on lock down. You will need to be able to identify the optimum type of wave for the reverse off the lip. The perfect wave for this move is a large wedge peak moving quickly towards a less powerful floater section.

Speed, power and projection are key elements and taking a high line on the wave will ensure you have the maximum speed possible.
As the floater section approach’s you, with good timing you will need to make sure the inside corner of your board does not get bogged in the lip. Although it all happens quite quickly it should feel as if you are placing your board on top of the white water.

At this point you need to pull your weight forward on to the centre of your board, cross your legs and throw your head aggressively into the rotation.

At first you can expect to be initiating the spin at the top of the wave and dropping backwards down with the white water to finish the spin and ride out of the move.

The objective is to do the spin as fast as possible and complete the rotation on the top of the curtain. In time and with lots of practice a good off the lip reverse 360 is the perfect precursor to performing the much coveted AIR reverse!

Get out there and keep at it. It will come with practice…..
