San Diego, the state’s second largest city, is at the heart of a metropolitan area that comprises all of San Diego county. Surrounding communities include Escondido (north), La Mesa and El Cajon (east), National City and Chula Vista (between the northern and southern portions of the city), Imperial Beach (southwest), and Coronado (west; at the northern end of Silver Strand).
