A storytelling method which has turned rotten recently is the concept of "subverting expectations". There are plenty of stories which manage to pull it off. But as of late subversive writing is losing the elements which make it effective. I think the best case study in subverting expectations is "Game of Thrones". Here is my analysis of how "Game of Thrones" succeeded early on and later failed spectacularly in subverting expectations.
