New York's Gotham Court was an evil place to live in the 1800s. A notorious slum. In these back alleys buildings, rents were high and standards were low, as money was squeezed from residents who lived hand-to-mouth, and whose lives fell into drudgery, loose morals and the the escape of the ever present grog shop. Find out what, with an account by a contemporary sanitary inspector, what it was like to live in a Gotham Court tenement in 1865. You will discover just how disgusting living conditions were for residents – so terrible, that he found it hard to describe without violating the decencies of language.
