Spending time in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is stressful for both babies and their families. Nationwide Children's "Sounds of Love" is an innovative program aimed at reducing some of that stress by creating an opportunity for parents to have a presence at their baby's bedside through recorded songs and stories.

A CD of the recording is then played for the infant using low-decibel pillow speakers. Listening to their parents' voices not only provides infants with a connection to their family, but also helps to calm and soothe infants in an environment filled with unfamiliar sounds like beeping monitors.

Depending on an infant's medical needs, the length of stay in the NICU can range from a few weeks to more than a year. And in an environment where parents may be unable to hold and care for their baby as they would a typical newborn, the "Sounds of Love" program offers another way for parents to bond with their baby -- even when they can't be there.
