Nariai Temple is located in a scenic spot overlooking Amanohashidate, one of Japan's three most scenic views, and has been worshiped as one of the five ``holy places'' across Japan, a training ground for Japan's ancient mountain religion.
It is said to have been founded by Shino Shonin in the first year of Keiun (704) as a Chokugan temple for Emperor Monmu, and the principal image is the Bodhisattva Sho Kanzeon, famous as the Substitute Kannon and the Beautiful Kannon.
Inside the temple grounds, there are the ``Bell of Fallen'', which tells tragic stories, the ``Bottomless Pond'', which tells strange stories, and the ``Mamukai no Ryu'' by Goro Hidari.
It is also fun to visit Amanohashidate while taking a cable car and mountain bus.
Located at the northernmost tip of the Saigoku Temple, the snow gets deep in winter, but the view of Amanohashidate covered in snow from Narai Temple is also special.
