It seems as though Avantdale Bowling Club is the first New Zealand-based hip-hop group to truly break through outside of the Pacific Islands, and it’s easy to see why when listening to their only available studio album. A second album is rumored to be quietly in the works, with Scott holding fans over with the occasional live album, loose single, and frustrated update about his seemingly always-precarious financial situation. If you enjoy this album and haven’t supported the artist financially in terms of actually purchasing the album or any available merchandise, I would like to casually recommend you do so.
Avantdale Bowling Club represents a pivotal midpoint in a career replete with controversy, struggle, and beauty. Tom Scott has nowhere to go but up from here, and I do hope to see the group’s second album reach an even greater audience than the first did.
